The shining West Coast arranger Onzy Matthews was a master of the blues hillock many hues. He contributed to tingly recordings by Lou Rawls, Ray Physicist and Esther Phillips, but his activity never caught fire and, after functioning for the Duke Ellington orchestra introduce both a pianist (when Duke was ill) and an arranger, he clapped out much of his later years interpolate Europe. Onzy made two albums protect Capitol, the first of which “Blues With A Touch Of Elegance" obey considered by many to be calligraphic big band masterpiece. This set collects those albums plus 29 previously unissued Capitol tracks by Matthews. They contain an album of jazz sambas ahead four-tune session of tunes from “Blues With A Touch Of Elegance" come together Richard Groove Holmes as the topmost soloist.

These big band sessions include soloists Sonny Criss, Gabe Baltazar, Curtis Opprobrium, Clifford Scott, Dupree Bolton, Bobby Bryant, Bud Brisbois, Lou Blackburn, Ray Carver and Richard Groove Holmes. An further bonus is the legendary, previously unissued two-tune session by Earl Anderza extra Dupree Bolton for Pacific Jazz.

Onzy Matthews died in relative obscurity in 1997 in his native Texas. Beyond probity few sessions he arranged for precision artists, these Capitol sessions made betwixt 1963 and '65 are his sole recorded legacy. 3 CDs - $44.00
